Sewing Tutorial: DIY skirt

Hey all,
I've decided. I have multiple interests and most of it revolve around sewing, designing and art. I will start showcasing my variety of works here on this blog and aside from showcasing my works I would also be sharing some of my own tutorials on how to make simple tote bags, pencil cases, tops or even skirts. Some of the things I'll be sharing might not be mine but I will definitely put in the credits.

The first thing I'm going to share here is a tutorial by Brett Bara. This video tutorial was what my very first sewing project was based on. I have to thank Brett Bara for making sewing easy for beginners. I loved her video so much and knowing that her book was going to help me, I PURCHASED "Sewing in a straight line" by Brett Bara at www.bookdepository.com. Book depository is my FAVOURITE online bookstores where a wide-range of books are available and offered at affordable prices. Books are always in mint condition :)

Here is the video and all credits go to Brett Bara, next time I will share more on Brett's book. There are some other videos by Brett which will be like a useful guide to the book. Enjoy this video and happy sewing!

This is my version of this skirt. Mine is a long skirt though because I don't wear short skirts for obvious reasons.

For a long skirt the technique is the same but the material however is different. Cotton fabric is fine and it may be cute with the prints and all but it may look stiff. Try to find fabric that flows well to make long skirts really pretty. For long skirts you can use 2 yards worth of fabric.

WELCOME TO MY SEWING LOFT

HELLO, HELLO!!!
So excited to begin compiling my journey as a beginner seamstress and aspiring fashion designer. On this blog I'm going to share the projects I have completed,  the projects that I am working on and my experiments. I will also share the challenges I face in creating clothes. Maybe I should just do a write-up on my sewing experiences and my sewing space. This will be a fun blog full of learning and sharing :)

Started sewing : DECEMBER 2013
When I first bought my own basic sewing machine after many MANY MANY failures with others' machines. I felt like I was under some curse LOL because machines tend to just screw up when I use them. So I bought a basic sewing machine, the brand is "BROTHER" and I am madly in love with this first machine of mine. It is so smooth, it is a genius creation albeit being very basic. With different footers I could do different sorts of stitching like basic overlock. Like hey, I'm a beginner thus I have no over lock machine but with a brilliant footer it makes my work so much cleaner. Neat edges with over lock and roll hem footer. So introducing my machine:

THE BEST PART ABOUT THIS SEWING MACHINE IS ; TOP-LOAD BOBBIN!!!
It is easier to load the bobbin, less complicated and less hassle. I see many people using the side load bobbin or bottom load always kind of run into the problems of tangled thread and stuff but I can safely say I hardly have this problem with my top-load machine. AND that ladies and gentlemen is what I love most about this machine aside from it being smooth.

MY SEWING SPACE  : NON-EXISTENT

I am currently sharing my room with my younger sister so this is pretty much impossible. I am waiting for her to actually get married and have her own home then I can build my REAL sewing loft. MUHUHAHAHA. I may sound evil but hahaha who cares? I want that sewing loft. In fact, my sister's getting married end of this year. heheheeh. By then, I can slowly build it :)

SO WHERE DO I SEW?

I sew on the FLOOR! hehe that's right! I actually sew LIKE A BOSS. Hahaha. Most people find it uncomfortable but to me sewing on the concrete floor feels natural to me.

SEWING EDUCATION?

I began with zilch knowledge. I actually created my first skirt using an online video tutorial that I found. Aside from online resources I HAVE A COLLECTION OF SEWING BOOKS, which I will write reviews on. After like a whole year stitching my own clothes using online resources (which I will share), I enrolled for 2 sewing classes earlier this year which means total of 12 lessons attended. I learnt a fair bit there as well! I will share what I have learnt there too^^ I want to be generous with my knowledge. I WELCOME PEOPLE TO SHARE THEIR KNOWLEDGE WITH ME TOO!

WHY I WANTED TO SEW?

The interest started because I love designing clothes. BUT there is always this huge problem in making my designs come to life! Because I can't find a seamstress OR they just charge TOO MUCH for a simple design. I have a fair share of heartaches as well. SO I DECIDED to take things into my own hands: TO LEARN SEWING.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST... I hope to gain new friends from this space and learn from others from this space as well. DO NOT BE SHY TO COMMENT OR ASK QUESTIONS I AM ALWAYS ALWAYS HAPPY TO HELP AND ANSWER QUESTIONS. I really hope to build good friendship with people who share the same interests as I do ^^

LOVE,
TEACUP
